The longer wording is usually “increased battery discharge when stationary, continued driving possible, replace battery.” Those words are doing what they say. The 12V is leaking down while the car sits. The car still trusts itself to move. Replacement is already due.
Continued driving possible is true while you’re on the road. The high-voltage system tops up the 12V as you drive. The risk is the next park. How to tell the 12V failed, not the pack
Start with what still works. If the app reports range, the drive pack probably isn’t your problem. If the fob still blinks from an inch away, the 12V is low, not gone. If nothing at all responds, the 12V may be fully discharged. Either way, don’t assume you need a high-voltage charge first.

Wake the car from the engine bay
You don’t need to reach the rear battery to get moving. BMW put a dedicated jump terminal under the hood for this mess. That matters on the shoulder of I-10. It matters in a tight airport structure. It matters when the liftgate won’t unlatch.
The interior hood release is mechanical. It works with no 12V power. Pull it, then pop the safety latch at the nose. Look for a red cover or red cap. It’s near the strut tower or the fuse box. That’s the positive jump post. For ground, use an unpainted metal bracket or bolt on the chassis. You don’t need the rear battery for this. Don’t go hunting under trim in a live lane.
Connect positive to positive first. Then attach the negative clamp to chassis ground. If you carry a jump pack, use that. A neighboring gas car can serve as a donor with the same polarity. The AGM is in the trunk, which is a problem when the car is dead
BMW didn’t put the 12V under the hood. Opening the engine cover and hunting for a case wastes time. On the i5 and the i7, the AGM sits in the rear. It’s in the luggage compartment behind a trim panel. That’s fine when the car is awake. It’s a headache when the car is dark.
The liftgate is electronic. A dead 12V won’t open it. Use the physical key blade hidden in the fob. Unlock the driver’s door with that blade. Once you’re in the cabin, fold the rear seatback. Reach the battery from inside if you truly need to. For a roadside revive, you usually don’t.

If you can’t jump it yourself

After it starts, finish the repair
